Wheelchairs & Seating Systems successfully crash tested with 4-point strap-type securement as of: April 19, 2013

*RESNA WC19 Wheelchairs Used as Seats in Motor Vehicles is a voluntary industry standard that establishes minimum design and performance requirements for wheelchairs that are occupied by users traveling in motor vehicles.  One of the most important design requirements of the standard is for the wheelchair to provide four specific attachment points (see illustration that follows) that facilitate proper and effective securement of the wheelchair facing forward in vehicles using a four-point, strap-type tiedown that complies with SAE J2249 Wheelchair Tiedown and Occupant Restraint Systems for Use in Motor Vehicles. The wheelchair must be successfully crash tested in a 30-mph, 20-g frontal sled test using these securement points.

 

Four labeled securement points are crash-tested and easy to reach on the wheelchair frame.	These securement points permit proper attachment of 4 securement straps and a clear path of travel for proper fit of occupant safety belts.

The following table is a list of wheelchair products available with securement points and that manufacturers have reported as successfully crash tested with 4-point strap-type securement. A listing of crash tested wheelchair seating systems is also located at the bottom of this page.

Since May 2002, the RESNA WC19 standard requires that wheelchairs be crash tested with a wheelchair-anchored pelvic safety belt. This belt connects to a vehicle-anchored shoulder belt, thereby offering the user a potentially better fit of the pelvic belt with reduced interference of personal space by another individual. The last column of the table indicates whether a wheelchair was crash tested with and is available with the wheelchair-anchored pelvic belt. Some products are listed on this page even though they are not compliant with this provision of WC19. They are listed because these wheelchairs have been sucessfully crash-tested and provide 4 securement points which improves passenger protection.

The international standard for wheelchair transportation safety, ISO 7176-Part 19, does not require a wheelchair-anchored pelvic safety belt. Wheelchairs imported from other countries may be compliant with this standard. Contact the company representative listed below to clarify this issue.
